Happy Thursday!

Well, I haven’t quite managed to pull together a column for this week (hopefully next week!), but I do have some things to share. For instance, did you know that the Baltimore City Council’s Budget & Appropriations Committee is holding a hearing on the Baltimore Police Department’s budget (slated to increase by $13.5M over last year) at 5:30pm on Friday, 6/12, and that you have a critical opportunity NOW to make your voice heard on it?

  • Written testimony for the whole committee can be emailed to marguerite.currin@baltimorecity.gov by 4pm Friday (deadline was extended last week after advocates complained!), or can be sent directly to Council members (but I don’t know if they’ll read it — better to be on the committee’s official record). Also good to reach out to Scott (CouncilPresident@baltimorecity.gov / 410-396-4804) and Young (Mayor@baltimorecity.gov / 410-396-4900).

  • Wanna get out on the street? Organizing Black is holding a DefundBPD March tomorrow, Friday, 6/12 from 3-6pm starting at 300 E. Madison Street. https://www.facebook.com/events/291854778530441/
  • And/or, you can join Communities United and others for a Rally to Defund the Police from tomorrow, Friday, 6/12 from 4:30-6:30pm starting at 2221 Maryland Avenue. https://www.facebook.com/events/628117448051169/
  • After those, you can watch The 13th, a crucial film about America’s ongoing legal practice of slavery via imprisonment, at Dinner & a Movie with Brian & Shorty tomorrow, Friday, 6/12 from 7-10pm at 2120 St. Paul Street. Ribs by Shorty’s Bootleg BBQ, but bring a dish and art supplies! https://www.facebook.com/events/1507701256057475/
  • Then over the weekend, Ujima People’s Progress Party and others are holding a Baltimore March & Car Caravan for Community Control of Police this Saturday, 6/13 from 2-4pm starting at Orleans & Bond Street. https://www.facebook.com/events/587040855533895/

Sorry to anyone who doesn’t use Facebook, since it’s obviously the one social media outlet I do use… I swear I’m gonna set up presences on other platforms any day now…
